Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Test match action

The pace bowler has taken 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

Australia's selection chief George Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series set to start on the 21st of November in Perth.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about his chances of being involved.

"We're aware that time is getting short and various factors at play, not only the back issue, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he's going to play a key capacity. With luck starting in Perth. If not, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of back injuries, with recurrences in multiple past seasons causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the contest.

Bailey noted that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Backup Options

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the national team for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and stated that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs anyway. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
