At least 13 people lose their lives and 98 hurt in rail accident in Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's key government projects.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” stated the head of state.

The president announced that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The leader noted plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Major Initiative of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This venture was a hallmark of his government's developmental vision for the southern region.

Another massive rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The construction of both rail lines was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its role in civilian works. They were completed at an accelerated speed, defying predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked persistent questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an previous collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a primary political opposition called for an prompt pause in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This halt was proposed until the completion of a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."

In reaction, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in full compliance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these strategic undertakings.
